Do you want to know how to sew? Machine sewing is easier than hand stitching in a lot of ways but both methods have their benefits and disadvantages. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what the best option is for you.
The ancient art of sewing by hand is obviously a tried and true method since it’s still in practice today.
When sewing by hand, you really don’t need much. A needle, thread, material, scissors and maybe a tape measure and straight pins are all you need.
All of these are relatively inexpensive items. Even children can learn how to do basic stitching by hand. It’s uncomplicated and, hey, if it was good enough for your ancestors, it’s good enough for you too, right?
Of course, there are few things in this world that don’t have drawbacks. While hand stitching is possible, for some people, it’s impractical.
With a machine you can produce straighter seams and stronger, more even stitches at a much faster rate. It may not be a problem to stitch a tear on a jacket by hand quickly, but if you’re a professional and need to turn out lots of clothing quickly, machine sewing seems the only way to go.
This is just one instance where paying the price of a good machine outweighs the consequences of not having one.
So why would anyone prefer to hand sew? Machine sewing isn’t as cheap. Obviously to sew with a machine, you need access to a sewing machine.
If you don’t purchase a decent machine or don’t know how to properly maintain it, you may have to spend a lot of money on repairs. That’s an extra expense some can’t afford to spend.
If you want to learn how to sew, machine sewing may be a good option after you’ve had ample time to practice sewing by hand.
A beginner on a machine without guidance could prove to be disastrous. It will also give you time to acquire the various sewing accessories that you need regardless of what type of method you choose to be best for you.
